What is the difference between a Shiba Inu and an Akita?
They are two different Japanese breeds that look alike but differ most in size. The Shiba Inu is small-to-medium (about 8 to 11 kg); the Akita is a large, powerful breed (often 30 to 50 kg). Both are Japanese spitz-type dogs, both are aloof, loyal and independent, but the Akita is far bigger, more protective and more dog-reactive. For most Singapore homes, the Shiba is the more practical of the two.

The Shiba Inu and the Akita are both native Japanese breeds and share the spitz look, erect ears, curled tail, thick double coat, so photos confuse people constantly. The moment you see them together, the confusion ends: the Akita is a large, imposing dog, while the Shiba is compact enough to pick up. Both descend from ancient Japanese hunting stock, but the Akita was bred for large game and guarding, the Shiba for small game in the mountains.

This is the headline difference. A Shiba stands about 37 to 40 cm and weighs 8 to 11 kg, a compact medium dog. An Akita stands roughly 60 to 70 cm and commonly weighs 30 to 50 kg, a genuinely large, heavy, powerful breed. The Akita needs more space, more food, stronger handling and a more experienced owner simply on account of its size and strength.
For most Singapore households, and certainly for anyone in an apartment, the Shiba's size makes it the far more manageable choice. The Akita is a serious commitment suited to spacious homes and confident owners.

For the large majority of Singapore buyers, the Shiba is the more realistic choice: it is apartment-scaled for private property, easier to handle, and needs less space and food, while still delivering the Japanese-spitz character people fall for. The Akita suits a smaller group, experienced owners with space, who specifically want a large, protective guardian breed and understand what that entails.
