How big does a Shiba Inu get?
A Shiba Inu is a small-to-medium dog. Males stand about 38 to 40 cm at the shoulder and weigh 9 to 11 kg; females are slightly smaller at 37 to 39 cm and 8 to 9 kg. It is compact and muscular, looks larger than its weight because of the thick double coat, and reaches full size at around 10 to 12 months. That medium build is exactly why it sits above HDB's small-breed threshold.

Male vs female: how much difference?
There is a modest, consistent size difference. Males are a touch taller and noticeably more substantial; females are finer and a little lighter. Neither is "better", and both make excellent companions, so size alone is rarely the reason to choose a sex.
Temperament varies far more between individuals than between the sexes, so we would not choose a Shiba on gender for behaviour reasons. If you are deciding, message us about the specific puppies available rather than the averages in the table.

Why the medium build keeps it off the HDB list
HDB's approved-breed list is built around keeping flat dogs small, and the Shiba, at roughly 8 to 11 kg, sits just above that band. It is genuinely close to breeds that are approved, the Japanese Spitz among them, which is why the near-miss frustrates so many buyers. But approval is decided breed by breed, and the Shiba is not on the list.

Size decides the housing question
At ~8–11 kg the Shiba is a private-property breed by default. If you are in an HDB flat, read the HDB page before you fall for a face.
What about a "mame" or "mini" Shiba?
"Mame" means bean in Japanese, and a mame Shiba is simply a smaller-than-standard Shiba, not a separate breed or a different, rarer dog. We will source a smaller Shiba on request at standard price, but we do not charge a premium for the word and we are honest that deliberately breeding for undersize carries real health risk.
