What is a mame Shiba Inu?
"Mame" (豆) means bean in Japanese, so a mame Shiba is simply a smaller-than-standard Shiba Inu, not a separate breed. There is no "mini", "miniature" or "teacup" Shiba breed. We will source a smaller Shiba on request at standard price, we do not charge a premium for the word, and we are honest that deliberately breeding for undersize carries real health risk. A smaller Shiba is still not HDB-approved.

Mame means bean, not a breed
Let's clear up the label first, because a lot of money changes hands over a misunderstanding. "Mame" is Japanese for bean, and "mame Shiba" describes a Shiba on the smaller end of the size range. It is a size descriptor, exactly like calling a person petite. It is not a distinct breed, and terms like "mini", "miniature" and "teacup" Shiba are marketing, not kennel-club categories.
That matters because some sellers present a mame or mini Shiba as a rarer, more special animal and charge accordingly. It is the same wonderful breed, just smaller, with the same temperament, the same coat and the same care needs described on the breed guide.

Here is exactly how we handle it. If you specifically want a smaller Shiba, tell us, and we will do our best to source one for you. We place it at our standard Shiba price; we do not add a "mame" or "mini" premium, because charging extra for a size label is charging extra for nothing.
We also will not pretend a small Shiba is a separate, rarer dog to justify a higher price, which is the game some sellers play. Our floor is our floor, whether the dog is at the smaller or larger end of the range. The pricing is on the price page.

The honest health caveat on deliberate undersizing
There is a real reason we do not push "mini" dogs. Deliberately breeding for the smallest possible size, generation after generation, or selling the runt of a litter as a premium "teacup", can concentrate health problems: fragile bones, dental crowding, and other issues associated with pushing a breed below its natural size. A naturally smaller Shiba from healthy parents is fine; a dog bred to be tiny for its own sake is a welfare risk.
So our position is not "we refuse the word", it is "we will place a smaller Shiba honestly and we will not encourage breeding for extreme undersize". A healthy dog first, a size preference second. If a seller is pushing "teacup" hard and charging a premium, treat it as a flag, the same way you would a suspiciously cheap listing on the scam guide.
Health before size
Deliberate breeding for extreme smallness carries real health risk. Choose a healthy, correctly-raised dog first; a smaller size is a preference, never a reason to compromise on welfare.
A mame Shiba is still not HDB-approved
One practical point people hope goes the other way: a smaller Shiba is still a Shiba, and the Shiba is not on HDB's approved breed list. A mame Shiba is not a workaround for the housing rule, and no amount of smallness changes the breed classification. The full housing picture is on the HDB page.
